An eye emergency is any event where your eyesight is at risk. These emergencies require prompt treatment with your eye care specialist to prevent vision loss.
If you feel you have an eye emergency, contact your eye doctor immediately. If your eye doctor is not immediately available to assist or direct you, report to the nearest emergency room.
The following symptoms require immediate care:
-Chemical contact with eye
-Sudden loss or decrease of vision
-Eye Pain
-Onset of Flashes and Floaters
-Sensitivity to light (more than normal)
-Foreign Body in the eye
-Double vision
-Severe Head, Eye, or Face trauma
-Red Eye
-Presence of pus or crusting
Emergency Eye Care
Chemicals in the Eye:
If you get any chemicals in your eye, please stop reading this, remove contact lenses if present and irrigate your eye immediately with saline solution or the equivalent, if none is available, tap water is an acceptable alternative. Do this for 15 minutes, and then go directly to your eye doctor's office.
Mechanical Injury to the Eye:
If you mechanically injure your eye or something gets in your eye, DO NOT push on your eye. Put your glasses or sunglasses on, which will provide some protection to the eye and immediately be seen by your eye doctor.
